Marcola School District and Friends of the Media Center to Hold Candidate Forum March 21, 2018
On Wednesday, March 21, 2018 from 6:30 – 8:00 pm, five of the six candidates for East Lane County Commissioner will address the Mohawk Valley Community in the run up to the May 15th primary election. Each will be given a minute to introduce themselves before being presented with specific questions. Then each will have up to two minutes per question, with a total of eight or more questions.
The Friends of the Marcola Schools Media Center approached Superintendent Bill Watkins with the idea of having the County Commissioner Candidates come speak at the elementary school gym. One of the Goals of the Friends Group is to provide educational programs for the Mohawk Valley Community. Mr. Watkins leaped at the opportunity to meld high school government instruction with the candidate forum. Four of the eight questions for the candidates have been prepared by students who will be able to vote in May, with input from the younger ones.
“We are always seeking ways to prepare our students for life after high school. So, giving them the opportunity to apply their studies to a real life questions for the candidates is an excellent way to help them participate in our democracy as adults,” Watkins said. “They came up with both policy and process questions, and I am looking forward to hearing how the candidates respond”. The students’ questions were sent to the candidates on March 14th. The rest of the questions will be selected from the audience.
The High School Digital Media Class will be live streaming the forum on Youtube. Mr. Watkins and Helen Kennedy, President of the Friends Group will be asking the questions. Afterwards, everyone can enjoy some refreshments with the candidates.
