Trimester Recap from Principal Whaley

December 11, 2020

Dear Mohawk Jr/Sr High School Families,

We are close to the end of the first trimester of this school year.  It has been a term full of challenges and innovation.  We held our first ever virtual parent teacher conferences, our first entirely virtual learning experiences, our first try at learning in pods.  We helped students and families find new ways to connect to school, access classes on Zoom and grades via Schoology, and delivered computers, food, and supplies directly to homes.  While not without hiccups, the staff and students are showing up and getting it done every day.  I am so proud of the character our community, our students, and our staff have demonstrated in overcoming obstacles and making the best of a less than ideal situation.

As we reflect on the fall term, with an eye toward improved outcomes, we will be making some adjustments for Trimester 2 that starts on Tuesday, January 5.  The main adjustment will be to move all of the pod meeting times to earlier in the day.  We hope that this shift will help students complete more academic work and improve their grades.  Your pod teachers will send a new schedule of specific class meeting times to each student before classes start after Winter Break. Additionally, some of the electives will change slightly. (Year long electives will stay the same.)  Students who have not participated or earned grades for their elective this term will have a chance for a fresh start next term. Trimester 1 grades will be mailed home as soon as we get all the final grades recorded and verified in the first week back in January.  In the meantime, please log into Schoology to see how your student is doing.

Grades and attendance matter!  High school students’ grades earned this term will be included on their transcript with a letter grade.  For all students, being on time to class every day is critical for learning and not falling behind or getting lost.  Help us help your student by reminding them of how important it is to be in their classes every day and supporting their academic efforts.

The last day of school before Winter Break is December 17 and the first day back is January 5 for students.  Happy holidays!

Stay safe and healthy,

Stacey Whaley
