20 years and seven months. That’s how long Jim Smith heroically served his country in one of the most selfless ways possible — as a dedicated member of the U.S. Army.

Across his two decades of service, Mr. Smith held the ranks of both Sergeant and Officer, earning a well-deserved place in the Airborne & Ranger Training Brigade Hall of Fame as a Distinguished Brigade Member. This honor is awarded to Rangers who demonstrate “selfless service to the Airborne & Ranger Communities and the Nation.”

Jim’s recognition comes not only from his exceptional military record but also from his unwavering commitment to his community. In addition to his service to the nation, Mr. Smith and his wife, Kristie, have foster-parented 34 Lane County children and adopted two boys, embodying the same values of dedication, compassion, and service in their personal lives.

Mr. Smith’s military journey reached its peak in the elite ranks of the U.S. Army Rangers. “My career highlights included serving in Ranger School, Scrolled Units—2nd 75th Infantry—as an original member, and being hand-selected to work with the Blue Light Anti-Terrorism Team,” he recalls. That selection placed him on the Falcon Force, a unit of Rangers chosen to help with the two-year creation of Delta Force, the Army’s elite counter-terrorism unit.

Today, Jim Smith continues his legacy of service as a long-time Marcola community member and Marcola School District Board Member, where he remains a steadfast supporter of TEACH-NW and its mission to empower learners and strengthen communities.

We are deeply proud of our REACH Team for reaching out to Mr. Smith to capture a glimpse of his incredible story and contributions. His life stands as a powerful reminder that leadership, courage, and compassion can take many forms — from the battlefield to the boardroom to the heart of our community.
